Diving back into C#

The past few days I have gone back to working on projects in C#. I started a few that I decided I didn’t like and ditched, but I have settled on one that I like. Not that one doesn’t exist already, but it’s something fun for me to work on. The project: ID3 Tag library.

For any of you that don’t know what ID3 tags are, they are a way to store data about a media file inside of the file itself. For example, Most of your music probably has ID3 tags containing the title of the song, the artist, the album, etc. That’s how programs like iTunes get the information. It’s stored either at the beginning or end of the file in a certain format.

Once I wrapped my head around the format (which you can find the spec for over at id3.org), it was pretty easy to start writing code. So far I’ve written classes to store and and do some basic manipulations of The Tag itself as well as the Frames within the tag. The next thing to do is to write the part that actually reads the file, finds the tag, and creates the appropriate objects according to the data. Unfortunately, I think that will probably be the challenging part. But I’ll get it.

I’ve wanted to write a library to do this for quite a while now, I’d just never really put my mind to it to actually understand how to do it. I think it’ll open a gateway to a couple more projects I’ve also been wanting to do for a while. I’m excited to get home from classes today and resume work on it.

Jessica Paquette: Why I chose computer science over art

jesskavidja:

Throughout my life, I’ve had quite a few different directions I wanted to branch off in, in terms of future careers. It’s been either a virologist, an astrophysicist, a computer scientist or an artist of some sort.

All of these things are very interesting to me. I’m a secret biology geek, I’m…

See now this is something I wish more people would realize. Computer science, despite all it’s technical components, is a bit of an art form in itself. Solving the problems that we face, and solving them well, takes a large amount of creativity. It might not be strictly the same kind of creativity that you would use with a more traditional artwork, but programs are their own works of art, open to be judged, criticized, praised, berated, enjoyed, honered…anything you would do with a typical work of art. You just need to look at it with a different eye.

I’ve got CS In My Brain

firah:

You know you are going insane when the next time you look at video games, all you see are if else statements, while, do, and for loops, Boolean algebraic equations, decelerations, etc. Thanks Computer Science Intro Class, Java. I actually don’t mind though, it makes me lean towards video game development then :)

It’s gotten so bad with me, I do this to just about every programmable object I see. But it makes for a challenge to figure out how things might work sometimes so I don’t mind it.

Currently listening to Kasabian. It’s good music to listen to when you’re in that I’m-bored-and-don’t-know-what-to-do-because-I-don’t-want-to-do-my-school-work-but-I-don’t-have-anything-else-to-do moods.
